Eye First Aid

“Knowing a little bit about eye first aid can be helpful and useful,” commented Fairfield County Ophthalmologist Leslie Doctor, M.D. of Doctor & Associates with offices in Norwalk, Westport & Wilton, Connecticut. “Most of the time when you get something in your eye it is quickly washed out by the tears you produce. However, sometimes a particle or small foreign body can scratch the cornea which is the clear outer layer on the front of the eye. A scratched cornea typically takes a couple of days to heal, can be very painful, and may need treatment from an ophthalmologist”, stated Dr. Leslie Doctor. “In general, if you get a chemical of any type in your eye or something embedded in your eye, you need immediate medical treatment-so don’t simply try to remove it on your own.”

For less serious events such as removing a loose eyelash or a dirt particle in your eye you should wash your hands before touching your eye, then look in the mirror and try to find the object in your eye. Try the following methods to remove the object:

1. Blink several times to allow your tears to wash it out. Do not rub your eye.
2. If the particle is behind your upper eyelid, pull the upper lid out and over the lower lid and roll your eye upward. This can help get the particle come off the upper lid and flush out of the eye.
3. If something is in the corner of your eye or under your lower eyelid, use a wet cotton swab or piece of clean cloth to get it put.
4. Fill an eye cup or a small glass with warm water. Put your eye over the cup of water and open your eye to rinse your eye and flush the object out.

Chemical burns to the eye are a medical emergency. Follow these steps if you get a chemical in your eye:

1. Flush your eye with water for 15 to 30 minutes. Keep your eye open while flushing with water.
2. After you flush your eye out, call an eye doctor. If possible, bring along the container the chemical was in.

You should call an Ophthalmologist if you have severe or worsening pain in the eye and if you still have an eye irritation 30 minutes after you have flushed your eye with water. CT Corneal Specialist on Pinguecula & Pterygium

Connecticut Cornea Specialist Leslie Doctor, M.D. commented on differences between benign eye growths called Pinguecula and Pterygia. “A Pinguecula is a growth on the conjunctiva-the clear membrane that covers part of the surface of the eye. The growth looks like a thickened area of tissue and is often cream colored. Some people may notice blood vessels on it. This is called a Pinguecula if it does not reach the cornea, the part of the outer layer of your eye that covers the colored part of the eye-the iris. If Pinguecula get bigger and extends onto the cornea we would call it a Pterygium.” These growths may be caused by wind, dust, chemical irritation or even ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. If your eyes are often exposed to harsh conditions these growths are more likely to develop. They are more common in people who live close to the equator.

The most common symptoms may include redness, inflammation, irritation, a dry or gritty feeling, itching, burning and even blurred vision. If these growths do not cause any problems they do not need to be treated. If they cause redness or irritation you may benefit from using eye drops like artificial tears. If you have symptoms that continue to get worse or if your vision becomes blurred you need you to see an ophthalmologist. A Pterygium may grow and cause vision problems. It can block the light entering your vision. Also, a growing Pterygium can change the shape of your cornea and cause blurry and distorted vision. In that case a surgery might be necessary to improve your condition.
If you have any questions or concerns about your eyes or would like to learn more about Pinguecula or Pterygia please call Doctor & Associates-203-227-4113, visit Doctor & Associates in Fairfield County or facebook.com/doctorandassociates.

About Eye Melanoma Cancer

“An eye melanoma or an intraocular melanoma is a type of cancerous tumor in the eye," remarked Fairfield County Ophthalmologist Leslie Doctor, M.D. of Doctor & Associates with offices in Norwalk, Westport and Wilton, CT. The part of the eye affected by this rare type of cancer is called the uvea. She further explained, “The uvea is made up of the iris which is the colored part of the front of the eye that surrounds the pupil, the ciliary body which is a muscle that helps the eye focus and makes the fluid that fills the front of the eye and the choroid which is a layer of tissue in the back of the eye, behind the retina. The location of the melanoma in the uvea affects its symptoms and treatment.”

An ocular melanoma happens when cells that produce pigment grow uncontrollably. Pigment produces the coloring of the skin and iris of the eye. What causes the abnormal growth of cells is not known. People with light colored skin and eyes may have a higher chance of developing melanoma than people with darker skin. Rarely, this type of cancer starts in another part of the body and spreads to the eyes. Often melanomas cause no symptoms. Sometimes they may cause painful, red eyes or changes in your vision. A melanoma of the iris may look like a dark spot on the iris. It may block part of your vision. A melanoma on the ciliary body or the choroid may cause blurred vision in on eye or loss of side vision. The tumor is usually found during an eye examination with an ophthalmologist. If a physician sees a tumor, you may have an ultrasound scan to see what kind of tumor it is.

Connecticut Doctor on Eyestrain Problems

Connecticut eye doctor Leslie Doctor, M.D. commented, “Eyestrain problems and tired eyes are complaints we hear more and more with the increase in use of computer related devices such as iPads and iPhones and really anything with a digital screen. The medical term asthenopia is what patients are describing when they tell us about eyestrain or tired eyes.”

Excessive or prolonged use of your eyes is often the cause of eyestrain or asthenopia. While tired eyes can be quite annoying, in general the symptoms do disappear when we stop using our eyes for a while and rest. Typically eyestrain is not a serious condition, but could indicate some underlying problem that needs to be addressed especially if it is related to headaches, double vision, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. People who report eyestrain often do so by complaining about symptoms of fatigue, dull eye pain or discomfort, blurry vision, double vision, headaches, dry eyes light sensitivity and sometimes even a stiff or sore neck. Eyestrain is very common among people who use or work on computers or play video games for prolonged periods of time. The use of computer screens of any sort along with uncorrected common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and the age related near vision focusing problem presbyopia is a frequent cause of eyestrain. Along with even slight eye muscle imbalances, these focusing problems can really result in annoying eye fatigue and strain.

If you or someone you know suffers from eyestrain symptoms they are encouraged to schedule an eye examination at Doctor & Associates-203-227-4113, visit Doctor & Associates in Fairfield County or facebook.com/doctorandassociates so that we can help identify the possible causes and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

About Nystagmus Eye Movements

Fairfield County Ophthalmologist Leslie Doctor, M.D. commented on nystagmus eye movements. “Nystagmus is a type of abnormal eye movement that a person cannot control. The eyes may move from side-to-side, up and down, in a circle, or one eye may go up and the other down- it is quite individual,” explained Dr. Leslie Doctor of Doctor & Associates with offices in Norwalk, Westport and Wilton, Connecticut. Here are some things to know about nystagmus:
There are two kinds of nystagmus: congenital and acquired. Congenital nystagmus is present soon after birth. It may be caused by:

- Problems in the brain
- Poor vision early in life from conditions such as Cataracts (cloudiness of the lens), problems with the retina (the tissue lining in the back of the eye that turns light into visual images) or optic nerve (the nerve that connects the eye to the brain) and congenital Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye causing damage to the optic nerve).
Acquired nystagmus develops later in life and may be caused by:

- Drugs and medicines (such as anti-seizure medications or alcohol)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Brain tumors
- Stroke
- Injury

Sometimes no cause can be found and this instance, this type of nystagmus is called idiopathic.
The symptoms of nystagmus depend on when the problem happens. If you have nystagmus from an early age, your vision will usually be decreased but the eye movements may not bother you. Nystagmus that develops later in life may lead to blurry vision, dizziness, problems with walking or a sense that your vision is shaking. Some people with nystagmus turn or tilt their head to lessen the symptoms.
If you are concerned that you might have nystagmus or you know someone with nystagmus who needs to be examined by an Ophthalmologist, please do not hesitate to call Doctor & Associates at 203-227-4113 for an appointment, visit Doctor & Associates or facebook.com/doctorandassociates.

Fairfield County Cataract Surgery & Lens Implant Cost

“These days understanding the cost of Cataract Surgery and Lens implants can get a little confusing for almost anyone,” commented Fairfield County Cataract Surgeon Leslie Doctor of Doctor & Associates with offices in Norwalk, Wilton and Westport CT. “Although almost all insurances and Medicare cover the bulk of the cost of Cataract Surgery and basic Lens Implants, it is often the  case that co-pays and the extent to which certain services are or are not covered can affect the actual amount you might need to pay out of pocket,” further explained Dr. Leslie Doctor.
In general, the following guidelines can help patients understand what to expect regarding  the  cost of Cataract Surgery and lens Implants.

Preoperative Testing and Consultation
With the exception of co-pays and deductibles specific to your insurance plan the eye examination, consultation and measurements necessary for Cataract Surgery and basic Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation are covered services. If there are specialized tests that might be required such as more precise types of testing for multifocal lens implants or toric lens implants, you may need to pay for these tests out of pocket as your insurance and Medicare may only cover the basic testing. If this is the case these extra tests may range in cost up to a few or several hundred dollars depending on the scope of the necessary testing.

Surgery Center Facility Fee
The surgery center facility fee is generally covered by insurances and Medicare although there may be a small co-pay or deductible with certain plans. This fee will cover the use of the facility including the operating room, the nursing staff, the instrumentation and equipment and all related operating room supplies. Depending on the types of anesthesia used it is possible that there will be an additional fee-mostly covered by your insurance or Medicare-for the administration of anesthesia and the staff.

Cataract Surgeon’s Fee
The Cataract Surgeon’s fee is generally covered by insurances and Medicare although there may be a small co-pay or deductible with certain plans.

Lens Implant Fee
The cost of a basic Monofocal lens implant is generally covered by insurances and Medicare within the facility fee. However, should you and your Cataract Surgeon elect to use an astigmatism correcting toric lens implant or multifocal lens implant there will be an out of pocket fee as most insurances and Medicare do not cover these more advanced types of Lens Implants.
If you or someone you know has questions about the cost of Cataract Surgery and Lens Implant please feel free to call Doctor & Associates-203-227-4113, visit Doctor & Associates in Fairfield County or facebook.com/doctorandassociates.

Ultraviolet (UV) Eye Protection in Connecticut

“With summertime outdoor activities and time at the beach heading our way, we like to remind patients about the need for ultraviolet (UV) eye protection on the Connecticut coast. We all know how to protect our skin by using effective sunscreen lotions and crèmes-but how about protecting our eyes from the harmful effect of UV rays?,” queried  Connecticut Corneal Specialist Leslie Doctor, M.D. “We all need to remember to wear both UV-blocking lenses and a brimmed hat to protect our eyes as well.”

“At this point in time we know that extended exposure to UV has been linked to many eye problems and can actually speed up the onset of eye diseases such as Cataract, Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), certain cancers on the delicate skin around the eye, Pterygia-a growth of white tissue on the surface of the eye-and even Photokeratitis, a type of sunburn of the cornea,” said Dr. Leslie Doctor.

Patients visiting the Willows Opticians at Doctor & Associates will find a wide range of UV protecting eyeglass lenses available to choose from. Eye protection from UV needs to be complete but doesn’t have to be overly expensive. High quality sunglasses should block out 99-100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. It is also important to have UV protection in everyday eyewear, which is readily available with a number of UV blocking eyeglass lens materials, specialized coatings and photochromic lenses. Doctor & Associates is happy to recommend the appropriate measures to take to protect your eyes in special situations. If you have questions or need an appointment to learn more about protecting your eyes from UV please call Doctor & Associates for an eye exam appointment at 203-227-4113, visiting Doctor & Associates or facebook.com/doctorandassociates.
